Asturian Group, Inc. was awarded a SHPO historical restoration project located at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Facility in Portsmouth, Virginia. Within a historic district, one of the oldest buildings located at the medical complex was deteriorating and water freeze/thaw was responsible for excessive cracking of the historic structure’s masonry. The existing masonry/brick chimney was failing, creating the potential for structural collapse and pedestrian harm. Therefore, AGI was awarded a contract to perform masonry restoration to the chimney and attached masonry sections. An outside masonry specialty consultant was acquired to create and match the existing mortar composition and color. Matching existing mortar composition and color took several weeks to develop and approve by SHPO.. Once approved, the existing mortar joints were carefully removed through grinding and mortar re-installed. This tedious and delicate method of restoration was accomplished by highly skilled Masons who specialize in historic preservation techniques. Upon completion, the chimney and associated masonry was cleaned and formally restored to an originial state. Asturain Group has been involved with multiple SHPO projects and is some of our most rewarding work.
